Our Preview of This Week's New Releases (For Friday, April 13th)

Andrew: Hello readers! It's time for our weekly preview of this week's new theatrical releases, and honestly, this has been a weekend I've been looking forward to for some time.

Sarah, can you take a guess as to why that is?

Sarah: Well, could it be because there is a movie coming out that you have only been waiting some three years for it to be released?

A: Correct! It's been almost three years since this week's The Cabin in the Woods was finished filming, which means I've been waiting that long for this highly anticipated horror film by first time director Drew Goddard.

Co-written by Goddard and Joss Whedon (of Buffy the Vampire fame and director of this summer's The Avengers) and directed by Goddard (who also wrote Cloverfield), The Cabin in the Woods is a twist on the cliche...well...teenagers go to a you-know-what film. Describe by it's writers as a "loving hate letter," it's a film that looks to put the horror genre on its head the way Scream did back in 1997. It should also be fun to finally see Chris Hemsworth in a role he finished playing before he broke out as Thor.

S: Well that is another one that you will be going by yourself to see. I will have to interview you when you come back from that one. Yea, not so excited for this one to come out, because it means its just another movie that I won't go see on the big screen. 

Now, while it is a big one, The Cabin in the Woods is not the only movie coming out this weekend. We also have Lockout coming out. This futuristic movie looks pretty sweet! What do you think?

A: When I first heard about this movie it was called MS One: Maximum Security, which sounded like the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. Then I watched the trailer (as you should, too, readers) and I immediately pegged this film as one we needed to see.

Written from an original idea by Luc Besson, the French director/writer/producer most famous for Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, the idea of a John McCLane-type tough guy having to go into a space prison to save the President's daughter just SEEMS awesome. I've heard that some of the special effects are perfect, but all I'm really looking for from Lockout is action, explosions and one-liners from Guy Pearce.

S: Yea, I am excited for this one. I think the whole "prison in space" is pretty cool. Also a big fan of Guy Pearce, so can't wait to see this one!

Now...we have to have one of the bad movies...The Three Stooges. I really am at a loss as to why people thought that this movie needed to be made.

A: Now here's the thing about The Three Stooges, when this film was first announced there was a great deal of excitement surrounding it because of who was SUPPOSED to be playing the Three Stooges: Benicio del Toro as Moe, Sean Penn as Larry and Jim Carrey as Curly. That's a film I would have seen. 

Regrettably, all three ended up dropping out and we ended up with Will Sasso as Curly, Sean Hayes as Larry and someone named Chris Diamantopolous as Moe. It's still directed by the Farrelly Brothers, but it's no longer a film I wish to see. If, for some reason we do end up seeing this film, I'd be interested in seeing how it works with it being three separate "episodes" put together. My hopes are not high, though.

S: Yeah and with all of the extras, this movie is starting to become Epic Movie-esque. Just doesn’t look good. I am going to go ahead and say that we will not be wasting our money by seeing this one in theatres. 

While we are starting to get into the blockbuster season, this is kind of a quiet week. As the weeks progress though, you can be sure that we will be seeing as many movies a week as possible.

A: It might be quiet for YOU, but I'm definitely seeing The Cabin in the Woods as soon as we get back from Baltimore this weekend!

Our Preview of this Week's New Releases (For Friday, April 6th)

Andrew: Hello readers! We have been really busy lately so we've been absent from the theatres, but we're really hoping to change that this week. However, we're still bringing your our weekly preview as we take a look at which new movies we're most likely to see.

It's not THE biggest film coming out this week (we'll get to that one later) but American Reunion is the most anticipated new film coming out this week. The third sequel to the 1999 hit American Pie, in Reunion we see all the main players from the original trilogy coming back for...well...a high school reunion. Duh.

Sarah, what are your thoughts on American Reunion?

Sarah: I think this looks really funny. It could be because the hometown of the Pie-ers is based on a town close to my hometown in Michigan, it could also be because I love Alyson Hannigan, or it could just be because it looks hilarious! It's been so long since the gang was together. I think it will also be kind of cool because the gang has grown up with their audience so it will be relatable. What do you think?

A: While I was skeptical at first, because of the length of time between American Wedding and this new one, I came around to being excited because all the main actors are back and it's being directed by Adam Hurwitz, who has a writing credit for all the Harold & Kumar movies, as well as having directed Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay. The trailer looks funny, and of course, we both love Hannigan. Count me in.

S: OK, now on to the BIGGEST movie that has come out this week. Or should we say has re-come out. Titanic! Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 3 months, you've known that this one was coming out in order to commemorate the 100 years since the sinking of the ship. What are your thoughts on this one Andrew?

A: My primary thought is: I know how this one ends. But I'll let that slide. My second thought is: I hope the post-conversion 3D James Cameron did on it is good. And from what I've read, this is supposedly the best 3D for a film since Avatar, and at least on par with Hugo.

I do want to see Titanic during it's re-release and that's mainly because it's a movie that NEEDS to be seen in theatres on a big screen. It's the definition of a blockbuster. For the sinking of the ship scene alone this needs to be seen in theatres. So count me in.

S: I will be seeing this one as well because when it originally came out, I was in third grade and my mother WOULD NOT let me go see it! Even though ALL of my other friends got to see it! In hindsight, it really wasn't that risque at all but whatever, I was an only child then, with protective parents.

So the main movies coming out this weekend are sequels or re-releases. But let's be honest, it will probably be a HUGE weekend for the movies.

A: Yeah, for the most part these are the two big films. I don't know if that had to do with it being the weekend of The Masters or Opening Weekend for baseball, but there's not much coming out tomorrow.

Next week looks to be a little more jam-packed when we get The Cabin in the Woods, Lockout and The Three Stooges. In the mean time, I can guarantee that we will be seeing Titanic and American Reunion. So be on the lookout for our reviews!

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels Confirmed For "Dumb & Dumber" Sequel!

Hello readers, Andrew here. To be technical, yesterday was my actual birthday, but this news is one of the best belated birthday gifts ever!

In what has to be one of the greatest pieces of movie news I've ever heard, ComingSoon.net broke an exclusive story yesterday that Bobby and Peter Farrelly confirmed that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will be reprising their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne in a sequel to 1994's Dumb & Dumber!

The Farrelly Brothers are out promoting their new film The Three Stooges (which, in my opinion, looks absolutely horrible) and must have decided it was the best time to make their announcement for the long-awaited sequel.

After Peter Farrelly made it clear he and his brother had nothing to do with the atrocity that was Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, saying, "We did not do 'Dumb & Dumberer'. That was a studio thing," he explained why now was the time to make their sequel:

"(W)e've always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up. Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again.' He had just watched 'Dumb & Dumber' and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it.'"

To further add to the awesomeness of this news, Farrelly added that production on the film starts later THIS YEAR, which means we could have the finished product as soon as 2013!

Editor's Note: Speaking of Jeff Daniels, he's starring in Aaron Sorkin's new HBO show The Newsroom, and the trailer for it hit the web yesterday. Daniels plays a news anchor who goes into a downward spiral and it looks exactly how I'd imagine an Aaron Sorkin show on HBO would look. Which is to say, pretty darn good. Check it out:



Fun Fact: Considering I have the original film as one of my Top Ten Favorite Films, that makes it TWO of my favorite films to have an official sequel announced within the last 4 days (Anchorman being the other)!
