The First-Look Trailer for "Star Trek Into Darkness" Is Here!!!
Andrew: Hello readers! Sorry that we've been a little slow in the content department recently. Now that college basketball is in full swing I'm a little busier at the day-job, and Sarah's picking up more hours at hers, but a lot of them are at night, so our movie schedule is a little screwy. But we're coming with two posts today and the first one we're INCREDIBLY excited for... The "first-look" trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to J.J. Abrams' massive 2009 Star Trek reboot! Check it out below, and then I'll hit you up real quick with what Sarah and I thought of it:
Ok, so first thoughts when we first watched that? "Damn that looks dark and awesome!" Second thought? "Benedict Cumberbatch looks like he's going to be amazing as...Khan?" He has to be Khan, right? He's clearly out for revenge on Kirk, there's a shot of him sitting in the captain's chair on the Enterprise, and.....well, there's not much else to go on other than hearsay.
Until you watch the Japanese version of the trailer, which for all intents and purposes is the exact same as the English version, except the very last shot (the hand shot you can see right below, which is at the 0:56 mark in the trailer):
Tell us that's not an obvious homage to the end of Wrath of Khan. Suffice it to say, these trailers got us very excited for Star Trek Into Darkness. We both love the 2009 reboot, we love that this new one looks stylistically the same, and we love the new additions to an already great cast. May 17, 2013 can't get here soon enough for us! Do you, dear readers, think Cumberbatch will be a new version of Khan, or a different villain? Do these trailers make you excited to see it, too? Or do you have reservations about it? Oh, and what do you guys think of the film's name? Personally we like it.
I dont know a whole hell alot about Star Trek like I do comic book stuff, but im going to go ahead and put my nerd hat on and say that wasn't Khan.
I've heard the name Gary Mitchell, which was a former Star Fleet person who develops powers and turns evil. Im pretty sure I saw Cumberbatch wearing a star fleet uniform in that trailer so my guess would be Mitchell and not Khan.
We've heard the possibility of Cumberbatch playing Mitchell, too. And you're right, the shot of him wearing the Starfleet outfit and sitting in Kirk's chair would lend itself to that aspect. Good call! Abrams and Co. are doing a pretty job good keeping it under wraps, we must say.
AHHHH! I have to admit that in the second trailer, the hand shot is definitely reminiscent of the ending of Wrath of Khan. But as this reboot starts at the beginning of Kirk's career, he couldn't have met Khan yet. You meet Khan in an original episode where at the end, Kirk exiles Khan and his followers. In the 2nd movie, some 15 years later, you meet him and he's, needless to say, very angry. I'd be curious to see, if it is Khan, how they work in the storyline. I also don't think we'll ever see the Borg in this reboot because we don't meet them until (spoiler) the first Star Trek movie, and officially in the second season of Next Gen. But with all that being said, I'm beyond excited about this movie! -Eileen
